When you have a dui on your record, your opportunites can look a little bleak. Unfortunately, this is just a part of the punishment process when you make this very big mistake. While you might not be able to drive for awhile, the situation isn’t permanent. You can weather the storm if you can find a job that doesn’t directly require you to drive. Be creative, and do some research.
Factory Work
When you work in a factory or a warehouse setting, you can easily get away with taking the bus or even riding a bicycle to work. Since your style of dress generally isn’t that important in this kind of work, you won’t have to worry about getting your outfit a little messed up if you take public transportation. Factory and warehouse work is particularly conducive to not being able to drive because in those environments, a lot of people don’t have their licenses for one reason or another.
One problem you can run into is if your intended position expects you to do some driving, such as making deliveries or operating a fork lift. You need to be honest here, and hopefully your bosses will understand what happened. You never know until you try.
Office Work
Office work is a little bit different from the factory because your image matters a lot more. If you are finding a job with a dui in a city that has proper public transportation, you should be fine. Between your existing skill set and your network, being able to compensate for not being able to drive shouldn’t be too big of a problem. However, you still need to be honest about your short term limitation and how it will affect your ability to work.
Working Online
The online world is a gold mine if you’ve got a solid work ethic and are a fairly flexible person. While some people find working from home to be a challenge, setting boundaries about when you’ll work can let you keep some time for yourself and still earn a good living.
Working online implies that you can theoretically work from your local library, a coffee shop you can stroll over to, or even from your home without going anywhere at all. While this might not be a perfect option, it does take away the pressure of having to drive anywhere. Nine out of ten online jobs will almost never require you to go anywhere, unless you need to secure supplies for a special project.
